Refugees in Darfur

The Genocide in Darfur started in 2003 and has spread violence in Sudan and Countries around it.  People say that Darfur is experiencing the same violence that happened in Rwanda (Moran).  The black Africans are being attacked and murdered by ethnic Arabs.  The Arab tribe is called the Janjaweed, and is being supported by thy Sudanese government.  The United States needs to do more to protect the innocent civilians, and get more aid organizations in to Darfur.

The violence in Darfur has ruined many lives in Africa.  There are reports that 100,000 to 400,000 people have been murdered and that 2.5 million people have been forced to leave their homes and enter refugee camps.  The people that have survived have been traumatized for life.  The refugees say that the rebels have executed thousands of people and that there has been many mass rape (Ngala).  Being raped has ruined many women’s lives, for example Noura Moussa was engaged, but because she was raped by soldiers her fiancé would no longer marry he (Moran).  Refugees have fled to camps in Tawila, Sudan and even across the boarder to Chad (Polgreen).  Although in the camps people are safe from immediate danger there are still people dying.  Malaria and Diarrhea is killing children and the elderly.  These camps have thousands of people and they are all living close together, so it is easy for disease to spread.

There are organizations trying to help the refugees from Darfur, but there has been some problems getting these organizations into Sudan.  There are so many refugees dying in camp because there are not enough recourses to give them medical care, cleans water, and food.  These are basic necessities that they do not have.  The World Rood Program is one of the main organizations bringing food to Darfur, but they have had to cut the amount of food they send because they do not have enough money (Polgreen).  It is also becoming harder for aid organizations to get into Sudan because the government is not allowing them to come in (Polgreen).  The aid organizations that are there can be in danger.  In 2007 a truck bringing medicine to a refugee camp was attack by men on horses.  These men killed thirty civilian who were with the truck.

Today there are still many acts of violence in Darfur and the US needs to do more to protect and help the refugees in Darfur.  The UN has called the problem in Darfur the world’s worst humanitarian crisis (Moran).  This crisis is now bringing violence to other Countries like Chad and Central African Republic.  There are even citizens in Chad who have become refugees (Moran).  Right know there is the Darfur Peace and Accountability Act which added more peacekeeping force in Darfur, but there is still violence and there is more to do.  We need to find a way to bring more food, water and medicine to the people of Darfur.
